Hi, my name is Xiao "Wendy" Liu ( 刘晓). I graduated from Florida State University with a master's degree in Multilingual & Multicultural Education and a Ph.D. from University of Maryland, College Park with the concentration on Curriculum and Instruction. Before I came to Tower Hill, I worked at the Delaware Department of Education as a Chinese immersion instructional specialist. I am very excited to join in Tower Hill School in Wilmington Delaware as a Chinese teacher!
My husband Dr. Yi Cheng 程毅 works as a research scientist at W.L. Gore. We have two beautiful boys Max and Brian. As a family, we enjoy traveling, running, reading, and music! We feel very much blessed with our life. We hope to make many new friends and listen to other people's wonderful life stories. I am passionate about teaching and working with students. Well, let's have some serious fun in Chinese class! |

你好。I hope you had a great summer and things are going well this school year. I had my first test in mandarin and got a 97. My professor asked me to lead a peer tutor group. I just want to let you know that you did a great job preparing us. Thank you so much!!

你好,
I just wanted to thank you for this year in Mandarin. I truly enjoyed coming to class everyday and learning new things. I am sad that this was only our second year together, but as we both move on, I will remember all the amazing lessons you've taught me and all the songs, poems, and stories. Thank you for always making me leave Mandarin class with a smile on my face even when I came into class in the worst mood. Also, thank you for making your classroom a safe spot for all of your students and an enjoyable place to learn in. I will always remember my 2019-2020 Mandarin class; it was terrific. Thank you for making us laugh but learn at the same time. I genuinely feel that after every class, I've learned a little more and gained a little more happiness. I am sad to say that this short year will be our last time together. I'm going to continue growing as an individual yet still remember all the meaningful messages you've taught me. I am genuinely going to miss seeing you in the hallways and in Mandarin class.
谢谢,
贺爱达

Dear Dr. Liu,
As I sit in quarantine, reflecting on my senior year, I would’ve never imagined it ending like this. However, it gave me an opportunity to receive and be grateful to those who have taught and helped me through my time at Tower Hill.
Thank you for helping make an impact on my life at Tower Hill. You sparked my deep passion for Chinese culture and Asian Studies. Your incredible teaching made me fall in love with China and the culture, leading my trip to China. You also taught me how to adapt with excellence and perfection to obstacles. Thank you for helping and teaching me! Because of your class, I will study Asian Studies in College!
Thank you!

I wanted to say thank you so much for being one of my favorite teachers and guiding me through Mandarin 1 and Mandarin 2. I have always had a blast in class and having looked forward to having class every time. I truly wanted to express how much I appreciated you as a teacher and as a friend, and you were always able to make our lessons fun and interesting. I will greatly miss having you as a teacher next year.

下午好老师,
In advisory today, we were asked if we could type an email to any of the faculty or staff saying thank you and I instantly thought of you!
Although you weren't my first mandarin teacher, you are by far my favorite. I always looked forward to your class and would express my excitement to my family when we got home. All of the fun video projects and the performances we would do using the scripts were so much fun. This was the only class that I was able to have fun and learn at the same time. I also loved all the additional cultural stuff we did too like the ghost stories, exercises, and food (I really loved the food). On top of all of the classwork, we also had deep conversations too which I appreciated very much.
I really miss having you as a teacher and hope that you are doing well, Thank you so much! 谢谢老师!我最喜欢你!周末快乐!
谢谢,

There has been a relative paucity of research and theoretical investigations for foreign-born teacher candidates’ internship experiences outside of their country of origin. Particularly, how foreign-born teacher candidates learn and grow within the complex of a new social context has not been studied systematically. The qualitative case studies of three foreign- born Chinese language teacher candidates (CLTCs) aim to 1) identify the key influences that shape their internship experiences; 2) understand in what ways these influences have created resonances and contradictions for them; and 3) explore strategies CLTCs have adopted in order to navigate through the US education system. A sociocultural conceptual framework which highlights three domains of influences was created for single case and cross-case analysis. Findings revealed that key stakeholders exerted the most prominent influence on their experiences. CLTCs experienced most contradictions in interpreting the US education framework and managing classes. To navigate through their internship, CLTCs used a variety of strategies to strengthen classroom management, develop their teaching styles, and advocate for their programs.
