China’s National Anthem, “The March of the Volunteers,” was written in 1934 by playwright and drama enthusiast Tian Han. His song was written to motivate volunteer armies against the imposing threat of the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, in parallel to the foundation of the Great Wall. Although a great force was coming their way, he reminded the people to remember their past strength and courageousness that led them to the path of victory. After being used in the People’s Republic of China’s first appearance in 1949’s World Peace Conference, people began to believe that this song should be their anthem. Although there was much dispute, by the turn of the century, and continuing on until this day, the song became a unanimous hit. Now people sing this song to remind them of universal strength, and patriotism for their homeland.
Lyrics
English Translation:
Arise, you who refuse to be slaves!
With our flesh and blood,
let us build a new Great Wall!
As China faces its greatest peril
From each one the urgent call to action comes forth.
Arise! Arise! Arise!
Millions of but one heart
Braving the enemies’ fire! March on!
Braving the enemies’ fire! March on!
March on! March, march on!
